You must reach back to reclaim that which is lost in order to move forward. Using the arts and culture we educate, motivate, and activate artists and allies in service of grassroots movements and equitable change
The word Sankofa comes from the Akan people of Ghana. It is an Akan term that literally means, “to go back and get it.” One of the Adinkra symbols for Sankofa depicts a mythical bird flying forward with its head turned backward retrieving an egg from it's back in midair. The translation of the word and the symbol is “it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind.”
The word is derived from the words:
FA (look, seek and take).
Sankofa.org was founded in the spirit of great leaders and artists, and now turns its attention to the most pressing issues of our time. We educate, motivate, and activate artists and allies in service of grassroots movements and equitable change. Using art and culture as a tool for communicating messages of hope, creating a heart-opening and engaging community to action, Sankofa focuses on issues of injustice that disproportionately affect the disenfranchised, the oppressed, and the underserved, which left unaddressed will continue to impact the lives of too many individuals and remain a scar on our nation’s moral character.
