AWỌ is a nonprofit organization that offers inspiring programs and community workshops that bring people together across racial, cultural and economic divides to unpack and share a vast array of different human experiences, as well as, create new opportunities for collective upward mobility. AWỌ was founded in 2020 by Folake Phillips, a Yoruba princess from Osun State in Nigeria, in response to the death of George Floyd at the hands of the Minnesota police and the national street protests that erupted for Black Lives Matter in the midst of the US COVID-19 pandemic. AWỌ is the word for skin and also color in the Yoruba language of Nigeria. OUR MISSION AWỌ aspires to better understand the significance color, class and culture have on individual stories being heard within society. With a focus on innovative programs and educational resources, we engage people of all shades to share, learn and create a more complete and accurate narrative of Huemanity. It is our Mission to create opportunities for those whose stories have been historically unheard or misrepresented. OUR VISION The Vision of AWỌ is to achieve a more inclusive and representative world by focusing on the unheard stories of individuals within society to build a more collective understanding about ourselves. We believe that a more complete story of Huemanity creates accurate cultural narratives within society and translates into more inclusion and opportunities in local schools, workplaces and government agencies. OUR PROGRAMS When stories of individuals are incomplete, our narratives of Huemanity are inaccurate and continue to perpetuate social inequalities. Our programs are designed to educate, galvanize and offer the essential tools necessary to rewrite individual stories that can be leveraged for more inclusivity and representation within society. These include our Huemanity Salons, Huemanity Hacks, and Huemanity Festivals. Huemanity Salons Initially, AWO illuminates on topics affecting black identities across the Diaspora and Africa in the 21st century to provide a deeper understanding of the many unheard stories of black identity. The lessons learned from these experiences have evolved into AWO’s Huemanity Salons, which now support and engage many indigenous, ethnic, urban, and rural identities across America to create new opportunities for cross-cultural listening and engagement. Huemanity Hacks Designed to realign inaccurate narratives, AWO addresses the gaps created by historical exclusion, poverty, isolation and migration of people whose stories have not been heard. Our Huemanity Hacks unpack these gaps and create new community strategies to help individuals and groups develop skills and networks for upward mobility. Huemanity Festivals Besides telling unheard stories and skills building, AWỌ re-affirms our oneness and shared Huemanity through a biennial community event that enable people to connect directly with those different from themselves. Through cross-cultural experiential celebrations such as international food fairs, remembrance holidays as well as the performing arts, AWỌ bridges the cultural gaps in American society by inviting people to experience life perspectives beyond mainstream American traditions.
